Q: Where will the seminar be held? A: The seminar will take place at Troy University, Troy Alabama
Q: When will the seminar be held? A: Seminar participants may register any time after 9:00 a.m. but before 10:45 a.m. on May 27, 2011. The Alabama Leadership Seminar will begin with the opening session on May 27, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. and conclude at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2011. You must be present for the entire weekend seminar unless you have been excused by the Seminar Chairman.
Q: What kind of program is planned? A: During your HOBY seminar experience, many dynamic leaders-all volunteers from the fields business, education, government and other professions – will address numerous aspects of our changing world and the challenges future leaders will confront. The program will not promote any specific political party, business, religion or way of thinking; but it is designed to develop an awareness of present and future issues by actively involving seminar participants in discussions and informal debate. You will have the opportunity to ask questions of the discussion leaders throughout the weekend, which leads to a fuller understanding of topics presented.
You will be asked to become part of HOBY’s commitment to “Leadership for Service.” By undertaking a community service project(s) involving at least 100 hours, you’ll have the opportunity to join 335,000 other HOBY alumni nationwide who have made a difference in their school, community, place of worship or other “environment” in which they saw a need. the program includes outstanding speakers, entertainment and a special closing reception to which your parents are invited.
Q: What are the accommodations like? A: Meetings will be held in Smith Hall on the campus of Troy University in Troy, Alabama. Participants will be assigned to on campus dorm rooms with two ambassadors per room on floors reserved exclusively for the seminar. Everyone will receive breakfast, lunch and dinner. While the dorm rooms are fully furnished you will need to bring the following: Twin bed sheets, blanket, pillow, towels, wash cloths, soap, shampoo and any other toiletry items.
Q: If necessary, how may I be contacted during the seminar? A: Parents, friends and family members are discouraged from calling students during the Seminar due to the confusion created when meetings are interrupted. In case of emergency, your parent(s) or guardian may call the Troy University Police at (334) 670-3215, Monday thru Friday 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All other times please call (334) 670-1999. The Seminar will be chaperoned by qualified male and female adults who will be staying at the facility 24 hours a day.
Q: What should I wear at the seminar? A: Dress is casual throughout the weekend. Shorts are perfectly acceptable for Friday and Saturday. Dress for Sunday is “dress-up.” For Gentlemen this means shirt and tie. For Ladies this means a “Sunday dress.” You will be provided a HOBY t-shirt and there will be an announcement as to when you will wear the t-shirt during the weekend.
Q: What if I need to take medication while I am at the seminar? A: Please provide information about your medication on the Medical History Records Form and bring a doctor’s note with you to the seminar. Make sure to read and comply with HOBY’s Policy for Use of Medication During a HOBY event. Both documents are included with this packet.
Q: What transportation arrangements have been made? A: You are responsible for transportation to and from the seminar.
Q: What if I am unable to attend the seminar? A: If circumstances arise that prevent you from attending the seminar, we would like to give another student the opportunity to attend. Please return these forms to the person at your school who selected you and follow up with a call to the Alabama Leadership Seminar Chairman (Ryan Spry, 334-546-2606) so we may adjust our records and obtain an alternate student from your school to attend the seminar.
